Charlee was last to enter the main building. As the door shut, she spotted Franky’s guards making their way back down the road outside the gate. As they spoke to one another, one of them held up his hand and pointed at his knuckles. If Charlee were to wager a guess, she’d say they’d been successful in their hunt. She turned, but stopped. One of the men picked up her mom’s dance partner and heaved his body into the alley whence he came.

Must happen a lot around here. That was the only reason for these two to act so nonchalantly towards the discarding of an unconscious foe. It made Charlee that much happier to have people like Franky on their side. Carmen too.

The Flynns were led up to the second floor and through another doorway. This was obviously Franky’s office. It contained all the usual suspects as far as furnishing go. Desk, chairs, filing cabinets, computer… Franky stood in front of the desk and motioned for them to sit. Since there were only two guest chairs, Charlee took one, and Sean took the other. Sydney sat on the armrest of Sean’s plush chair and laid her hand on his shoulder.

They were cute sometimes.

Sydney held out a hand toward Charlee. “Francois Delva, this is Charlotte Flynn.”

“Charlee,” Charlee corrected, standing and holding out her hand.

The other man took it and squeezed. “And you may call me Franky. You’d be surprised how many people have difficulty pronouncing Francois.” He glanced down at their clutched hands. “Firm grip. Plenty strong.”

“Charlee here is a very accomplished climber…” Sydney explained as Charlee sat, “among other things.”

“I bet, considering her parentage,” Franky said, leaning back against his desk. They looked at Charlee. “Although, I was under the impression that you were unaware of your mother and father’s…careers.”

“Until a couple of days ago, I was. Been an interesting ride since.”

Sean sat forward. “We really need your help, Franky.”

Franky held out his hand. “Good to see you again, Sean.” His eyes darted to Charlee and Sydney as they shook. “Everyone healthy?”

“So far, yeah. Been some close calls, though.”

Franky smiled. “I’m sure there have. That’s kind of the Flynn MO, is it not?” He glanced at Charlee. “Once you are done doing whatever it is you are doing, I’d like to hear all about it.”

Charlee gave him a curt nod. “Deal.” She was surprised Franky wasn’t asking more questions. Charlee needed to know why. “You aren’t gonna ask why we’re here?”

“No, no, no,” Franky replied, holding out his hands. “I have found that it’s better to not ask, especially with your father in town.”

“Yeah,” Charlee said, “I hear the last time he was in Haiti he didn’t make a lot of friends.”

“Oh, so you know?”

Sean sat back. “Give it a rest, guys…”

Charlee snorted. “Heh, classic.”

Franky gave Charlee an impressed look. “You really are like your mother. With everything happening to you, you still find a way to smile.”

Charlee shrugged. “I mean, who wouldn’t find that story funny?”

“Me!” Sean blurted out, rubbing his forehead.
